Farm-based educational programs:

A note to parents about our programs –

We believe that learning at its best is FUN! Although our descriptions tend to focus on the fun part, we never cease to be impressed by how much learning takes place. Kids’ written and verbal reflections demonstrate an impressive depth and breadth of new knowledge related to nutrition, animal care, gardening, camping, cooking, and working productively and safely with a group in an outdoor environment.

We are committed to keeping our programs accessible to all interested youth. Please contact us to discuss financial options that fit your family’s circumstances.

For Kids

At Common Threads Farm, children and youth plant, tend, harvest, prepare, and eat delicious, nutritious food.

Our teaching tools include wheelbarrows, shovels, plants, soil, chickens, goats, measuring cups, and cutting boards!

One day might find us munching on salad or stir-fried vegetables. On another, we might be building solar ovens to bake muffins or dry apples. On yet another, we might be delving into the science of soil or figuring out how to measure rainfall in the garden.

Common Threads Farm offers scheduled after-school, weekend, and summer "farm camp" programs. We also work with teachers during the school year to provide customized learning opportunities that support and complement specific curricula and standards.

We believe in providing an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions and work together to find the answers, creatively and patiently solve problems, learn from mistakes, and cooperate and behave with kindness.

Common Threads Farm does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, ability, or sexual orientation. We view diversity as an asset and actively seek to cultivate an environment of inclusion and tolerance.

We are fully committed to accommodating people of all abilities. We welcome your call in advance of a program to make sure that we are prepared to meet your special needs.

Check back for 2010 dates
$155/child ($195 with transport to and from Bellingham) includes making and eating a healthy lunch each day

Why not start the conversation about healthy food by delving into the story of an old favorite? What does is really take to make a pizza? Join us as we go from soil to wheat to flour to dough; from milk to cheese; from seeds to veggies to garden fresh sauce.

Using this well loved food as our organizing theme, we invite your child to put on the hat of a “food scientist” and investigate the behind the scene stories of where our food comes from. Time is spent in the garden, in the kitchen, caring for animals, and on a learning field trip to the farmer’s market.

Hands-On, Heads-off Poultry Processing Workshop
October 24th, 2009 - 8:30am - 1:30pm
Common Threads Farm, 4050 Sunny Hill Lane, Lummi Island, WA

If you're a meat eater and have been meaning to get a little more connected with where your food comes from, here's a chance to learn how to efficiently and humanely slaughter chickens and turkeys.  Chef Charles Claassen will be on hand to teach some of the finer points of how to get a little clucker nicely cut up just like we’re used to in the grocery store!

We’ll be slaughtering both turkeys and chickens, so come learn on our birds, or if you've got birds of your own that need to be moved from the coop to the freezer, by all means bring them!

We will be using the poultry processing equipment that is owned and managed by the Whatcom Pastured Poultry Group.  This equipment is available for daily rental to all members of the community.

This workshop is intended for the home-processor.  Although we will have information about commercial processing regulations on hand, it will not be our primary focus.  Registration - $15, additional processing fee for bringing your own birds.  For more information, or to register, contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , 360-927-1590.
