At Common Threads Farm, children and youth plant, tend, harvest, prepare, and eat delicious,

nutritious food. Our teaching tools include wheelbarrows, shovels, plants, soil, ducks, sheep, measuring cups, and cutting boards!

One day might find us munching on salad or stir-fried vegetables. On another, we might be using solar ovens to bake muffins or dry apples. On yet another, we might be delving into the science of soil or figuring out how to measure rainfall in the garden.

We believe in providing an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions and work together to find the answers, creatively and patiently solve problems, learn from mistakes, and cooperate and behave with kindness.

Camp Pizza (ages around 8-12)Print this form and send it to the farm!
Monday-Thursday 9:00am-3:00pm
July 12-15 | August 2-5
Suggested donation: $160 -175/child

What: Why not start the conversation about healthy food by delving into the story of an old favorite? What does is really take to make a pizza? Join us as we go from soil to grain to flour to dough; from milk to cheese; from seeds to veggies to garden fresh sauce. Using this well loved food as our organizing theme, we invite your child to put on the hat of a "food scientist" and investigate the behind the scene stories of where our food comes from. Time is spent in the garden, in our outdoor "kitchen," and caring for farm animals.

Mornings are on the farm, afternoons are field trip based and may include visits with local livestock, interviewing farmers at the Wednesday farmer’s market, or a trip to learn more about how grains are processed into flour. This week culminates not only in a delicious kid grown pizza, but also in also in a chance for kids to run their own farm-stand. Think lemonade stand, only better!

Sliding Scale - For 2010, all programs are being offered on a by donation basis. Each program has a suggested donation: the amount that actually allows us to cover program, staffing, equipment and site maintenance costs in a sustainable manner. If life is treating you well, and you’d like to give more, we welcome your tax-deductible contribution! It times are a little tight, then please donate the amount that feels honorable and fair to you. We’re giving this approach a try - honor system, folks! Note: because you and your child are receiving services in exchange for the donation, only those donations above and beyond the suggested amount are considered tax-deductible.

Age Range - What do you mean by “around”? : People often ask about the “around” on our age ranges. Our age ranges are guidelines only. Many parents ask if they may enroll more than one child in a program - say a six year old and a nine year old in Farm Camp, or a seven year old and a ten year old in Camp Pizza. Of course you may! We'll count on you to be the best judge of what will work well for your children!

Learning is Fun - We believe that learning at its best is FUN! Although our descriptions tend to focus on the fun part, we never cease to be impressed by how much learning takes place. Kids’ written and verbal reflections demonstrate an impressive depth and breadth of new knowledge related to nutrition, animal care, gardening, cooking, and working productively and safely with a group in an outdoor environment.
